Death to HDMI

I was actually told about this from a friend during a conversation about new technology trends (I know–I’m killer at parties) but after reading some articles on the subject and what this means to the display industry I am very excited (and honestly, isn’t it about time?) that this has finally come along.

“This” being an all-in-one solution to all those cables you now need to connect your TVs and large format displays. Some big names in the industry (LG Electronics, Sony, Samsung, Valens) decided to get together and create a new connectivity standard for delivering uncompressed HD video, audio, and ethernet using a standard cat5e/cat6 cables and RJ-45 connector.  No more running out to get new cables because our old stuff is now obsolete.  This new standard will transform and declutter our lives so that we may enjoy our viewing experience in an almost cable-free world.

HDBaseT enabled products are set to ship later this year and in full swing early 2011.  To read more about HDBaseT and the HDBaseT alliance click on the links below.

Tech-Privacy–Privacy Screen Integration

Tech Global just introduced privacy filters integrated into our LCD displays. These privacy filters cut down on the viewing angle so that viewing sensitive information is protected from others.  Integrated inside the LCD display allows this product to maintain the original design and aesthetics of the monitor.  We also can integrate privacy filters with or without the touch screen option.

Tech-Privacy by Tech Global

Tech-Privacy helps you meet today’s privacy laws in healthcare, homeland security, and much more while giving your customers peace of mind that their personal information will not be inadvertently seen by others.  This also helps cut down on the possibility of identity theft is public kiosks and other self-service applications.

For more information on where to purchase or what displays these can be integrated into, please visit our website by clicking here or contact our sales department at 888-623-2004.

Understanding Touch Technology

One of the recurring themes from HITEC was the lack of knowledge regarding touch screen technology. Many vendors used touch screens in their booths to showcase their products but when asked, not many knew who the integrator was (most thought that the manufacturer (ie. LG) made the touch screens), no one could tell me what type of touch technology was on the display they were using and no vendor could answer why they would want DST over optical in some hospitality applications but in others optical is more appropriate.

There are many good primers on the different touch technologies available on the internet but the best way to find out what’s the best fit for your customer’s application is to work with a touch screen integrator that can help educate you on the difference between the technologies, the brands that they are integrated into and the difference between integrators themselves. If you purchase your touch screens from distribution, ask your sales rep to let you know what touch screen integrator provides that touch screen and find out as much as you can about them. This will help you in the long run when working on projects that require interactive digital signage or self-service kiosks and you’ll be able to offer your clients the best solution.

HITEC Recap

I was down in Orlando this week walking the floor at HITEC and got some really great insight into the future of technology within hospitality. Some of the most talked about things were could computing, in-room touch screens for room control and concierge, digital signage and social media. From the digital signage and touch screen perspective, here’s my recap.

Guestroom20X–this is a mock up of the guestroom of the future. Inside there are many cool things but they are already available. And if they are the “future” of guestrooms, they will be old news by the time they do make it to the guestroom.

Digital signage providers–lots of very cool stuff from many vendors and all able to offer hospitality a great software product. Lots of interest from hoteliers on different uses for digital signage. It seemed too that each content provider brought a different piece of the solution that hotel/venue might want so the different offerings were good to give decision makers options and get the product that most fit what they are looking to use it for. Lots more in-room touch applications rather than just digital signage for lobby areas. Many combined room control features with concierge/kiosk services but most were just in-room concierge apps (Intelity’s product ICE offers guests mail, room service ordering, flight information, weather, ads, and concierge services like housekeeping and transportation). Intelity also offers their product as an iPhone app for guests. Vendors are getting requests both for a desktop version (bedside or on the business desk) or integrated in the television.

Hardware–LCDs and LEDs abounded but there was also much interest in 3D displays. The Samsung 3D LCD was featured in the Guestroom20X and in PSAV’s booth (got to watch some of the FIFA matches on it and it was completely amazing). Touch screens were everywhere and as an integrator I was interested in finding out who integrated the touch for them (not many could answer that). The one commonality amongst those who did display touch screens–they are being asked for more and more with everyone being used to the iPhone and iPad and now wanting that experience to transfer to larger format displays for interactivity with their guests. Display manufacturers whose core competence is the in-room market would do well to work with integrators and solution providers on a complete solution throughout the hotel. Same is true for digital signage providers with successes in common areas and lobbies.
